Hi,1st patio attempt immediately behind garage with fence on other side so only have to worry about 2 sides.Patio is about 5X4 metres.foundation in place. How do I install the 2 string lines for remaining sides? Do I fit them before laying first flag, then use spirit level on taut strings to get levels or lay corner flag first then, when flag is level, lay string lines so they are just in contact with the 2 sides of this flag? appreciate any help.

you need to determine your fall and pull your line through square. you will have to 3 4 5 it to obtain a square. one line will do and a good spirit level. look on the main index and it is all explained. good luck.

Use a 3-4-5 triangle to establish a perpendicular from the rear of the garage. Set up a taut string line and check the diagonals to ensure it is parallel to the fence line.

Set the level of the string at pavement level against the garage. Use aspirit level to establish the line as level along its length.

Assuming you are using a fall of 1:60, that's 17mm per linear metre, and so if your string line is 4m long, you need to lower the far end by 4 x 17mm = 70mm. This now gives you a guide to line and level for that edge of the patio.
