Quick question,
In the middle of this page there is a picture showing badly laid flags, in the middle there is a large flag heavily riven across the middle.
My question is which part of this flag would you level with the adjacent flags, the high point which in turn creates a low point, or the low points which creates high edges.
I had one similar but the low part was smaller so it has created a small area which holds water for a short period.
Was i right or wrong or is there no hard and fast rule

It's a matter of finding a level that minimises any trip hazard. Generally speaking, I'd use a straightedge to see how the overall level fits that of the surrounding flagstones, and then check the edges for any serious trips/lips.
It may be that, with some flags, you end up with one corner that is holding a small birdbath of water, but that would be preferable to a significant trip, IMO.

its purely down to judgement
i like to lay the heavily riven ones as its a bit more of a challenge and it does look better, but i find the really rough ones look better on paths than in a large area

Put them aside for cuts and use the 'best' ones by any doorways or walkways.

Unfortunately Rich, the slab was a 840x560 and came right in the middle of the patio. The patio is on two levels and the retaining wall for the higher area was put in to suit using a full pack on the bottom so i needed to use it.
It looks ok to me but there was a little puddle there when it pissisted it down last week.
I hand picked the best flags within the pack for the main areas - where the garden seat goes and the doorway./
I have left the steps until i have completed the upper level and i will see what i have left.
