Just been ask to provide a school board with guideline price for a pathway through some of their playing fields.
Specification is limited - just to achieve timber edged path , with self binding gravel surface approx 1 metre wide.
Looking to do upto 400m if they can afford it.
Any guesses as to a rough price for this work based on excavation, boards, base and surface.

My Company manufactures Ronadeck Fast Grip.
Reckon on ~£12-£15/m2 for resin bonded aggregate products plus a further £12-15/m2 to apply. If a new base needed you will need to cost for asphalt, tarmac or concrete sub-base which is also described in these pages.
If you haven't done resin bonded work before you can sub to one of our expereinced applicators or we (Ronacrete Ltd) offer training at £295 for 1st person from your company, £195 for each additional person attending. Can be arranged at short notice.

For a self-binding gravel, the cost of the gravel itself can be a large chunk of the price. Here in NW Engerland, you can get the Breedon Gravel for around 56-60 quid per tonne, and reckon on getting 15-18m² coverage for each tonne at 40mm depth.
You need ot allow for a 75-100mm sub-base, and tis is better off being DTp1 for the few bob extra it would cost. If you can get a limestone Type 1 (assuming limestone is suitable to the client and the local ground conditions), then it binds well with the Breedon, which is another form of limestone.
Add in your excavation and edging costs and there you are. If you can dump the excavated spoil onsite, assuming it will be topsoil, you can create the path, with simple timber edgings for around 25-30 quid per square metre, but I strongly recommend costing out the job, as relying on text-book prices usually means either you or the client is getting a bum deal.

Sounds about right, at this stage they just want a guide price to see how much the budget will achieve, hence reluctance to price up properly, I was reckoning on about £25 / metre.
Tried to explain per metre cost will depend on length of path, thus quanities on materials etc but they can't decide how much til they know the price.
