While clearing part of my garden I used some reclaimed roofing slates to make and edge a raised bed (I put the slates in end on) I beded the slates in in mortar. It looks ok. Im just wondering how long it might last?

Will the winter frost crack the slates? Will the slates expand and crack during the summer. Anybody tried this before?

The suspense is killing me (should I just have used edging instead?

I'm going to bed my heads sore!!!!!!!!

Frost shouldn't hurt them. What would worry me is - are they up to the job? ie Will the pressure of retained earth break them or tip them over. If they are thick enough and well bedded enough they should be fine.

If roofing slates were susceptible to frost or hot summers, it's unlikely they'd have been used for roofing, isn't it?
