Working out amounts

Patio flagstones (slabs), concrete flags, stone flags including yorkstone and imported flagstones.

I have been looking at your site and read tons of every useful hints and tips.

But there is one thing i cant find and that is how to work out amounts

what is the formula to work out the amount of sand i need.

is it l*w*d??

l * w * d = volume, which is not the same as tonnage, unless you're dealing with water.

For sand, reckon on summat around 1.7 tonnes per cubic metre

which if you buy the bulk bags means 2 tonne bags,not so you have some left over but because they call the bulk bags a tonne but they are nominally 850 kg of sand and plenty of water.
i think only pure water equates to 1 litre = 1kg
