First post, thanks to the people running this worthy site...
I'm puzzled by the colour variation in some flags I bought. Ordered some new, random squared stone from a Yorkshire quarry, colour described as buff. But I'm halfway into the patio now and there's a massive colour range - hope the image link below works - but anyway, there are a lot of purples, mauves, down to whites and everything in between. Very little buff.
Well, I love the colours. The stone is a lot thicker (up to 90mm) and more riven (5-15mm ridges) than I was expecting, but there's the character - like learning to love a lived-in face. But my question is, how much colour variation should I have expected in yorkstone - I was a first time stone buyer - and how often does stone from the same quarry change its predominant colours? Is the range in mine typical?
IMHO you look like you've got quite a nice patio - I do colouring of slabs and I would think your variation is quite acceptable, and should give an aged appearance within a short while. Large ridges are always a pain for tables and chairs, as said before, tend to put the smoother slabs in high travel areas and the rougher at the edges/for cuttings. I do my own slabs (colour) and tend to avoid mixing 'cold' with 'warm' colours, greys to my mind dont go too well with tans and browns, but I've seen mixes that do well.
