During August last year I layed approx 80 Bradstone 'Riven Style' Slabs (grey) size 450mm x 450mm on a preprepared concrete base. The slabs looked lovely and have given no problems until now...

Small brown stains have suddenly appeared within only the last week on the surface of nearly half of the slabs, the stains or marks resemble brown rust stains and appear completely at random on the surface of the slabs, some slabs have more stains than others, other slabs have no stains at all.

I have done nothing to cause this (painting, DIY or otherwise)and the stain cannot be removed by patio cleaners etc. I can therefore only assume there is some 'internal' problem with the slabs, but it seems weird after a year.

Does anyone have any idea what may have caused this and how I may get rid of these stains.

Many thanks

A photie would help the forum guys - plus I think a quick phone call to Bradstone's in order.

A friend of mine had a similar problem - although not with Bradstone. Photos might help to confirm whether your problem is the same.
He wrote to the manufacturer who replied with a long letter, first of all explaining exactly what caused it - lumps of something in the mix when the slabs were made - and at the end offering to pay for replacement slabs and the labour charges for lifting the marked ones and replacing them.

I've checked with my friend, and it seems that his slabs were made of recycled material. When the old paving stones (or whatever) were ground up, some scraps of metal were included, and these were rusting in the new slabs.
