Hi, I am having riven slabs laid professionally at the front of the house. They will come right up to the front gate which goes directly onto the footpath. For them to be laid flat would mean pulling up the concrete and I have been told that might bring the front wall down because it has been built directly onto the concrete. My concern is that anybody walking through my front gate will trip over a 50mm slab. How would you avoid this, or do you not think it would be a trip hazard?
Thanks in advance,
Fuzzy.

Could you put a coloured band at the edge to make it stand out?

Hi bob,
Thanks for your reply - that is an option but will look a little silly and take the charm away from the work - I think. Can you get edging of some kind that slopes down at all?

How about a row of kerbs - the kind with a chamfered edge at the top. Bury them deep and they will give you an edge as well.

Hi Bob, thanks for your reply. I am not too sure what you mean, but over the weekend I looked at other solutions that others have got and all I could find was a tarmaced ramp.

Could you not chase down 50/60mm, what I presume is just a concrete footing, with chisel attach on hammer drill, so the last flags lip over? We don't want to trip Granny over !

Have a look here to see what I did.

Suggers, thanks for your reply but a rather crude and dangerous option.
Bob, photos are a great help, now I know what you mean - I guess this could be a possibility yes - thanks very much.

Why not just break out the concrete to the width of the gate going back 900mm or so and ramp that section?

Thanks Mouldmaker but the question is with what? I have spoken with my paver and he said there is no problem ramping with tar-mac. Any other ideas?

It's up to you but I think a bitmack ramp would look crap - especially after a year ot two

Thanks, but in completion to your suggestion, what were you thinking of?

If you break the concrete out to the width of the gate going back around 900mm you should be able to ramp the paving down to pavement height from that point. It means a potential trip hazard either side of the inside of the gate where paving levels will be different but this is negligable compared to having it on the threshold.
