Individual bedding

Just need some confirmation here. If I want to use individual bedding for riven flags, I don't need to compact the bedding layer first? From the main website, it seems that I just screed it with a shovel or trowel, and use a maul to compact it with the flag in place? Just looking for some conformation before I start as I don't want to have to pull it up after a couple of weeks.

That should be fine aslong as its not too deep, if your unsure give it a little trample in so that it is lower than you need it to be, then put a little loose sande ontop to make the height then use the maul to compact that last little bit of loose stuff with the slab ontop
