I recently saw the Pavestone brand of sandstone flags at a local paving centre. These flags were closer to what I was looking for than all the others I had seen. The sales person, however, did not seem keen to supply them (only to special order) and pushed me towards the other Indian Stone on display. My garden designer made enquiries and found out that they were discontinuing this brand due to 'come backs' from customers and poor quality.

I am now confused as to whether I should take their word for this or whether they may have an ulterior motive for pushing the other Indian stone. I just wondered if anyone else had used the Pavestone brand of sandstone, successfully or otherwise.

Generally speaking, the stone supplied via Pavestone is as good as most of the similar stone on the market, although there have been quite a few comments this year about poorer-than-normal quality.

On Friday, a contractor in Wigan told me he'd sent back a load of Pavestone flags because they weren't square. The handful he showed to me were definitely iffy as the edges weren't parallel - one flag was a whole 50mm narrower at one end than at the other! He asked my opinion because the supplier was grumbling about taking them back and had claimed, wrongly, that such deviation was normal for that type of product.

However, there are hundreds of jobs up and down the country that have used Pavestone with no apparent problems. This is your patio - if you want the Pavestone flags, have the Pavestone flags, even if it means finding an alternative supplier.
