Hi,
I am having a new double garage built with a large area in front which will be paved, blocked, flagged or whatever. My builder has suggested laying indian slate flags in wet mortar for this purpose but as I have a large 4X4 (2 Tonnes approx) I am unsure whether this will be suitable. "Knowledgeable" friends say not.
There is no doubt these slabs look attractive and I have seen them laid as a patio. There is also a rough side and a smooth side and I wonder if there is a right way up or does it not make a difference. The rough side looks more attractive to me.

Flags are as strong - or as weak - as what's underneath them.

Something to consider with Indian slate is that much of what I've seen is quite prone to flaking. Your 4x4 is likely to exacerbate this, especially if you turn on it.

I can't recommend the run-of-the-mill Indian sandstone flags for driveway use. At an average of 25mm thick, they are way too thin and fragile. If you had a small car, the sort of thing driven by hairdressers, then laying the flags on at least 100mm of concrete gives them a fighting chance, but a 4x4 will eat them for breakfast!

If you decide to lay them upside down (known as the "Pillock Look") try not to get too upset when your friends and neighbours laugh at you!

Why not consider the new indian natural stone block-paving now in a choice of colours. You then have the product your after safe in the knowledge that they are suitable for your application

Have a look at Tony's news page then go to new product study. You will see a drive that we installed in the 'desert' colour

You will pay more for this product but they are lovely. As a stockist, we can quote for supply if you are interested.
