The Brew Cabin

Hi
I have moved into a new house the builders built a small patio outside the rear doors.The garden is on a slope I have dug out an area most of it is clay. The ground is very spongy for about 1 metre in front of the patio then is apppears to be ok. Any suggestion how I can firm this up so I can lay scattered slabs with shingle in between. Thanks

Lay a sub-base.
