I'm about to take up an existing patio laid on a dry bed (not sure of make up as was laid before i bought house)

i then want to lay 30mm slate tiles down. Any ideas on what sub base i need to put down, and do i need to do anything to the existing sub base?

We can't see the sub-base, so we can't really comment. try reading the main website and see what sounds right for your patio.
