A contractor is proposing to tarmac my car driveway with one layer of tarmac 2 1/2" consolidating down to 2".
This will be laid on a sub base of some hardcore and a top dressing of rolled reconstituted / crushed rubble which seems to contain a fair amount of earth. He is assuring me that one layer of tarmac (apparently pro- (something)) will be fine.
Are there any circumstances where this would be appropriate.
The whole lot is laid on earth with no existing base foundation. This is urgent I would appreciate a response. After reading your website I do not feel this is right. I need my concerns clarified.

Pro-Drive, perhaps? My understanding of Pro-Drive is that it requires a suitable sub-base and rubble with earth is not such. Pro-Drive is a special surface/wearing course of SMA (Stone Mastic Asphalt) that has been developed to be easier to handle in small quantities (rather than motorway quantities) and is better able to resist scuffing caused by power steering. It can be laid as a single course, but I'm not sure how popular this is.

Saturday is not the best day to get a response from Bardon, the manufacturers of Pro-Drive, and there's F'all info on their website other than this PDF, so I'm relying on a couple of pages of publicity that has been in my library since god-knows-when.
