Hi, can you help - I am trying to lay my first patio in my new house. I am looking at buying Marshalls Heritage range in Calder Brown. However a landscaper has told me that it is dated, and that it loses its colour quickly as it is man made. Is this true? I want to lay a really nice patio, that will look good for years. I have also costed it, and I think that my 27 square metre patio will require £1000 of Heritage slabs from Jewsons - does this sound reasonable? I have heard that I can get Indian paving for £13.75 per metre - which would only be about £370!
Finally, is halogen lighting of IP65 adequate for the patio, and would you reccomend low voltage, or mains?

Hi Paul, First of all ... cards on the table... I work for Marshalls. In the sense that Marshalls Heritage is an authentic reproduction of traditional English Yorkstone then one could argue it is "dated". But this is, of course, exactly what the product sets out to be. It is purpose manufactured to reproduce the historic effect of yesteryear. And none more so than Calder Brown whose colours are intended to give an immediate sense of stone that has been exposed to the elements for a couple of centuries or more. Like all concrete products the colour will tone down after a couple of seasons but it will never "lose" its colour. The price you've got from Jewsons appears steep to me. Try another merchant. If you visit www.marshalls.co.uk/transform and type in your postcode you'll get a list of other distributors in your area. You might also look at getting your patio installed by a contractor on the Marshalls Register ... you'll get the option of having an insurance backed 10 year guarantee which covers both labour and materials. And finally another benefit of Marshalls Heritage is the array of different features available. You can get steps, octants, circles, cobbles,squaring off kits etc. All in all the opportunity of creating a pretty dynamic patio. Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul i have to say i would go woth the Indian stone myself not only because it is cheaper but why buy something that is trying to immitate what you can actually buy, whereas the heritage range is one of the best on the market it will detereorate slightly with time and natural stone will weather and improve and you can buy most of the fancy kits in the indian stone as well. Have a shop around look at all the different colours of the indian and then decide which you prefer but do not go for the cheapest supplier there is a lot of crap flooding the market go and check the quality or ask someone in your area that will know who is the best.

Thanks for that, I am still not quite sure what I am going to go for. Does anyone know anywhere where there are displays of Indian Stone patios in the NW (Near Blackpool)?
