Hi there

I have read and heard 2 different stories about sub-bases, and I need to know which one is true. I'm planning to do a patio wth 450 sq mm flag (40 sq metres) and the land is a bit boggy.

A pal of mine reckons I need to dig out 4 inches, then fill back in with 2 inches of crusher run and compact it. Then he said that will be a suitable base to wet sand and cement the flags onto. I do plan to have it elevated slightly nearest the house and to run away from the house.

The next theory comes from this website, saying you don't need crusher run base to lay flags on. But to lay on compacted sand and cement.

Please help and tell me which one is the best.

The ground pretty much needs to be firm before you put your sub-base down, if its still a bit soft put some cement through the hardcore before you whack it. The site does actually mention hardcore as a sub-base :p must not have read that part.
