What type of sand to use for pointing - Gaps are between 5mm and 20mm wide

Patio flagstones (slabs), concrete flags, stone flags including yorkstone and imported flagstones.

Do I use bricklaying or building sand or sharp sand for the pointing? Planning to mix about 3.5 to 1 ratio. I'll be using the semi-dry approach to avoid staining the slabs.

I use 3 to 1 mix with soft sand. Don't make the mix too dry or it will tend to crumble. I use plasticiser as well.
