Tony, i have been a victim of the spot bedding gang, and am going to relay the patio myself. It is circular with over half of it with free edges.I have read about the famous 10:1 mix but am worried about the free edges rocking{again}. Because of this I am thinking of laying on a 8:1 slightly damp mix. Could you confirm that this would be ok for the whole patio.Thank you for a great site.

Yep - lay the free edges on a slightly stronger moist or damp mix to ensure you get a firmly fixed-in-place edge, and there's no real harm in using the same mix for the whole patio/circle.

Thanks for your advice and quick reply. I spent a day laying yesterday but due to being a bit slow, and the rather warm weather, i still have the outer ring to do. I pointed up each ring as i went as you suggest and it looks great. I fully understand the benefits of the full bed as against the spot bedding now as the whole thing is obviously very solid and stable.
Could you advise me how to continue with the final ring as it will be a few days before i get the time to do it. I did scrape back the bedding, slanting it away from the bottom edge of the last ring. should i break it up a little more before i continue, or providing the slabs will sit ok can i just carry on.
There is about 3 inches of bedding past the last laid ring and it is firm but easy enough to scrape loose. Hope this makes sense.

As long as you can get a bit of 'fresh' bedding in place for that outer ring, it will be fine.
