I'm laying some small thin concrete slabs/tiles which are supposed to be laid on a solid mortar bed. I'm stuck on how to estimate the weights needed for building sand/cement if making a certain vol of mortar. For instance if I need 0.4m3 of mortar, what weights of sand/cement do I order assuming a 4:1 mix ? I could not find a calculator for this on the website ?

You could use one of the concrete calculators, such as this one and simply replace the coarse agg (gravel) for extra sand.

Alternatively, assuming mortar has a density of around 2.1 T/m³....

0.4m³ @ 2.1 T = 0.84T

0.84 ÷ 5 = 17 (ish)

...so 170kg of cement and (4 x 170 =) 680kg of sand
