My question is quite simple I hope. I would like to know whether Cotswold chippings are considered suitable for a driveway? We went to look at a sample of the chippings today and it appeared very soft (it was a wet day) leaving our hands stained. I do appreciate that it deteriorates and will need topping up, but will it withstand the rigours of a car being driven on it?
Many thanks

The bottom line is to establish what the merchant/garden centre is selling as cotswold. Some centres sell what they call cotswold as a limestone product. Others sell cotswold which is a granite based product. it sounds like the sample you have seen is limestone thus not that suitable for a driveway. We always recommend a granite based material. Even though it might cost a few quid extra it'll be worth it in the long run. We sell a product called Yorshire Cream which is obviously cream in colour and a hard granite based material.

Genuine Cotswold limestone is very soft and not summat I'd ever recommend for driveway use. I know it is used in Oxon and Gloucs. but only because there's nowt else available at such a low price and the colouring is distinctively Cotwoldian.
You could use it on the driveway, but be prepeared to replenish it each and every year.
