Ive the chance of buying some imported chinese slate slabs 40mm thick, but it's a little pricey. I can also obtain brazilian slate slabs at 25mm thick, which is half the price.

If I go for the thinner slate, and lay it on a solid morter, will it crack, or be damaged from frost?

Which thickness would you choose?

I'd look more at the quality of the slate rather than the thickness. 40mm should be stronger, but it's not always the case. All things being equal, I'd normally go for the 40mm units, but there is so much variation in what is sold as slate that I'd need to see samples of each before choosing.
