We'd like to lay about 8m2 Indian sandstone in a random pattern. The design will not be a rectangle, but a 'jagged' edge. Imagine a square, but with lots of edge flags missing.

Also a couple of planting holes in the middle.

What's the best way to lay this? Laying the middle ones on an individual sand bed and treating the rest as 'free edges'? Or laying each one individually on concrete (not the spot method, I know!)

Or is there a better way?

Any advice much appreciated!

Plan it out in advance.

Lay on individual beds of 10:1 grit sand and cement with mortar joints, using a wetter mix at free edges to hold the flags firmly and securely in place.
