Hi, Excellent site. I used it a couple or three years ago on my last paving project which is standing up very well.
I am now on phase 2 which is a 1.8M wide path at the side of the rear addition of the house. After laying and compacting scalpings as a sub base for a sand bedding layer I find I still need to raise the level by upto about 15 mm over an area of several square metres. My son is urging me to do this with 1/2 to dust rather than more scalpings and although this would be easier to obtain in the required quantity, my gut feeling is that I should carry on with the same material as before. Any thoughts? Also is 50mm the absolute maximum permitted bedding layer or can this be exceeded here and there?

If you can manage to raise levels by just 15mm using these 'scalpings', then it's better than using extra bedding. The ½-to-dust stuff is a fair second choice, but it's bringing in another material and if you have scalpings onsite, that seems easier, to me.

As for the bedding, 50mm really is the ideal maxiumum. If it was a case of stretching that to 60mm or so for a few square metres, then it's not a major issue as long as it's properly compacted. For laying flags, I'd be even more tempted to add a sprinkling of cement to the sand bedding for any "over-depth" areas.

Thanks Tony. I've run out of scalpings, and minimum delivery is a ton which would leave an awful lot over. The 1/2 inch stuff I can get delivered in bags.
