Old 3x2's - Best way of laying

I have an MOT base and would like to know if I should just bed them on sand, dry mix or by using 5 blobs of morter(as by the marks on the backs, they were layed before) ?

Novice wanting to best reduce the risk of a bad back :o

The best way of avoiding a sore arse is not to use spot bedding - I've been known to kick prone backsides when I see spot bedding being used!
