Tony,
At the moment I am trying to install a nice drive constructed out of reclamed setts and would appreciate some advice.
I want to do the main body of the drive in European fan design.What is putting me off there are two recessed drains that I have to install.Do you think the cuts coming in to these will look a mess .Or should I keep it simple and just go for half bond.
Also the setts i have are are a bit messy with some tar on the faces I was thinking of cleaning them off with my power washer after buying a sand blast fitting for it.Has anyone had any experience with one of these or will I be throwing money away?.
Lastly would you joint with pitch or go for the easy point sett grout that has been discussed on this forum.

Hi

If you're laying the setts in a fan design you may end up with some very tight joints, which could pose a problem if you're considering a pourable jointing material. We have a mortar for slurry application called Grantec, which gives a nice gritty traditional finish and may be better for this job.

Fan layout is a real challenge, but it looks stunning when complete. Build yourself a template and take your time.

As for the MH covers, if you use recess trays, the cut pieces would be hardly noticeable, so don't worry too much about that.

For cleaning the setts of old pitch, wait for a cold morning and most of it will come off a few blows from a hammer and scraper. A ickle domestic sand-blaster will have virtually buggerall impact. The only sand-blaster I've ever seen do any good is a large commercial unit normally used for industrial tank cleaning and renovation of masonry.

When it comes to the jointing, whilst acknowledging that the Grantec product from Easipoint is bloody good stuff, I still think nothing looks as good as pitch with setts. If Sue and the team at Easipoint could come up with a jet black jointing compound, I could possibly change my mind (Yes, I know we've talked about this a dozen times before, Sue!), but for now, pitch is perfect for domestic driveways.

Thanks for the advice.I will go for the fan design but I know it's going to give me a bad time, the drive wont be finished until Christmas.As for pointing I will talk to Sue before making a decision but pitch dose sound nice.When it's all finished I will send you some pictures but don't hold your breath.
