I have 1700 square feet of mica slate pool deck. It was laid 24 years ago by myself with the help of friends. Basically if we hadn’t done it ourselves then it would not have been done as we could not have afforded professional help. While the job was an artistic success it was not a masonry success. It needs to be redone as the grouting has come out in many places and there are many pieces of slate that are loose.

The slate is laid on 2 - 3 mortar bed which in turn was laid on top of a 3 concrete slab. Both the slab and the mortar base are in sound condition. What I would like to do is lift the slate and remove any loose material and then relay the slate on top of the existing mortar base.

Are there bonding agents that I could paint on top of the mortar base and in the mortar and grout to insure a solid adhesion between the slate and the base?

Thanks for any information.

I'm sure Sim will be along any minute now ro recommend his Ronafix, and I have to agree with him - it really is the best option for creating a high-strength mortar for this type of work.
