I am planning to lay indian sanstone flags at the front of my house. The area is about 20 square meters including a path 6m x 1.25m, 3 steps, and a top landing of approximately 9m x 1.25m. The path is solid concete approx1.5 inches thick, the steps are solid concrete blocks and the top landing is mainly 600 x 600 concrete slabs as well as a 2m x 2m concrete block.
Most of it was layed about 70 years ago when the house was built . Can I use this concrete as a base and lay the new slabs on top or would it be advisable to start again? It is in good condition and would obviously save me a lot of time lifting it and breaking it all up.
Not allowing for tolerances on the thickness of the slabs what woud be the minimum thickness of cement required.

Thanks for that, I hadn't given damp proofing any thought. Most of the existing path can be lifted with the exception of the 2m x 2m concrete block (10 inches thick) and the concrete steps. The concrete block will be very difficult to shift and is probably there to stay!
Can you recommend any good suppliers of indian sandstone which deliver to Scotland. I noticed The Natural Slate Company advertise on thew net (17.50 +vat + £50 delivery)

50 quid delivery sounds like a bargain! Most companies price their deliveries based on distance and quantity ordered.

Most of the companies listed on the Stone Paving links page will gladly deliver to Scotland. For some reason, actual Sottish-based suppliers seem to be thin on the ground. I'm sure there must be some, particularly in the central valley, but I don't have contact info for any.

If anyone does know of good stone paving suppliers in Scotland, please let me know.
