Does anyone have any experience of using travertine in a patio? How does it compare with better quality Indian sandstone in terms of performance (strength, frost-resistance etc)? Can anyone recommend a reputable supplier?

Westminster Stone produce a high spec fibre reinforced reproduction Travertine, and distribute a range of natural Travertine. Both available in 4 random sizes.

Will be in the brochure update from the beginning of May. Nothing on the website yet though. Samples can be made available through stockists. Phone 01978 710685 for your nearest.

Good luck

I don't think you can make a direct comparison between Travertine and Indian sandstone - you need to know the thicknesses and the types that are being compared.

However, overall, the Travertine that is being sold as suitable for outdoor applications is suitable for patio use only. I wouldn't use it for driveways or any other application where heavy loads are anticipated. The Travertines I've seen are usually around 30mm thick, so they need a full mortar bed. They're not overly tough, but stand comparison with some of the imported sandstones.

As for suppliers, John will be able to tell you who, in your area, stocks the Travertine supplied by his company, but, in the interest of balance, you could try Rock Unique in Sevenoaks, Midland Slate in Wolverhampton, Stonescape in Wigan or one of the other companies listed on the Stone Paving Links page

Whereabouts are you? It doesn't say in your Profile.

Thanks for your reply. I'm in Bedford, which is not very near any of the suppliers, unfortunately.
