Hello All -

I would like to relay my patio in something more attractive than the plain concrete slabs that are down at present. Unfortunately, there is a cast iron manhole cover right in the middle of the patio. Underneath the manhole is a chamber about 1m x 0.5m. Feeding into the chamber is the kitchen waste drain; a pipe then leads from the chamber and joins up with another nearby drain that carries the foul water from the downstairs toilet.

What are my options - would it be possible (and sensible) to cover up the chamber in some manner, and then lay paving over the top?

Advice/suggestions very welcome!

Cheers

Alan

Alan,
I've just laid some paving with an inspection chamber situated within the body of the paving. I replaced the existing cover with a recessed cover and then infilled the cover with slabs continuing the pattern. It involved some cutting of the slabs to fit and for the lifting eyes and also reducing the size of the chamber opening but looks neat

Yep - Gary's right: the Recess Tray solution is the way to go. Have a look at the page referenced above and then come back if you;ve any further questions.
