Hi, I'm about to start work on a new patio/path. I have an existing patio/path of 600mm X 750mm plain concrete flags on what looks like a bed of 75mm sand/cement mix. I'm going to replace and extend both patio and path. Can I reuse the existing base? Also someone has suggested placing the existing flags in the new sub base and topping up with sharp sand. Is this a good idea (as it would also mean I don't have to dispose of them!) and how much sand/cememt mix do I need ontop/in the gaps?
Cheers.

The base - as long as you mean 'base' and not the old bvedding, which is contaminated with cement, then yes.
Laying the old flags into the sub-base - not a good idea unles they are broken up into small pieces of not bigger than 100mm and plenty sand/fines brushed in to fill any voids.
As for the pointing, it depends on the type and size of flags but I think it is covered in the Pointing section of the main website.

Thanks Tony.
I think I'm getting a litle confused here.
I've read on your pages I don't really need a sub base if only laying for path/patio.
The existing base is about 120mm thick and solid. does this consist of a base and bedding?
Do I have to rip it all up or can I put some fresh sand/cement on top (The new flags are thinner then the existing) if I build the new base & bedding to the same height?

Sorry I'm late - been away
A sub-base isn't essential for pedestrian only paths or patios, but my understanding of your query was that you considered breaking up the old flags and using them as a sub-base.
I'm confused with the rest of your post as I can't figure out what you mean when you refer to this 'base' you have. Can you clarify?
When it comes to over-laying the existing, there's nowt wrong, in theory, with this idea, as long as you're not compromising the dpc levels and you will be able to tie-in with other pavement levels.
