I have been asked by someone to lay a patio. The area is on an old area of lawn and flower bed 11 slabs by 4 (60mm by 60mm slabs ) I was planning to put down 75mm of type one sub base compacted as best as i can and laying the slabs on a 50mm of sharp sand /cement (10:1) full bed and pointing up afterwards. my question is, is this depth of sub base over the top? I dont want to have to barrow tonnes of sub soil and tonnes of sub base. Any advice would be appreciated.

75mm is ideal. You might be interested in my answer in this thread of the Block Paving section which explains why I think 75mm is the correct depth for a lightweight sub-base.
