Gravel Joints

Hi,

I want to use gravel as an alternative joint-filler for my patio. The joints vary between 10-60mm. What types of gravel will be ok and what I can use to keep the gravel from moving?

Hope this isn't too late - been on another of me cultural missions to deepest, darkest Essex.

Well, obviously, you need a gravel that will fit into the narrowest of joints, so that means you need summat under 10mm. Therefore, a 6-10mm gravel should be just the ticket, so you;ll have to have a mooch around your local BM or garden centre to see what they have in that size range.

As for stabilising the gravel, that really isn't going to be a big problem in such relatively narrow joints. If you did find that you were losing gravel due to scour or pesky bloody kids, then one of the resin binders would be the best option to 'glue together' the individual pebbles without turning them into an impermeable mass.

You couldn't name a decent, cheap, and easily available resin binder, could you?

I have found some 3-6mm natural pea gravel that looks pretty good and I'm hoping to lay it in the next month or so.
