I have 90 19th century red clay paviours taken from a Maltings. They are 1 foot by 1 foot by 2inches and perforated for drainage I assume. I intend to make them into a patio laid in groups of 4 inlaid in a matrix of bricks or modern paviours.

For the base, my intention was 10cms type 1 or similar and a 1:6 mortar mix on top. However I am worried that the perforations (about0.5cm) will pool water. What is the best preparation do you think?

Lay as 'norma' block pavers - see the Laying Block Paving section of the main website.

If you laid them on a mortar bed, how would they drain?
