Get the transit, it is still the best van as an all rounder, the vw transporter may be better in some respects but you'll pay for it. Dont buy a merc they rust to easy. The mk6 you are probably looking at is great, i love mine. Cheap to run, cheap to fix, easy to get parts, not silly money secondhand, and they do mega miles. The mk7 i have no experience with other than driving one for a few thousand miles and they are fast!

I might go back to a Tranny Van. Cooked the engine on my L200 on top of Barton Viaduct (M60 Trafford Centre) this week and the prognosis is running into four figures already!

Ive had two mk6 transits. Both no problems with rust, the smiley face use to rot front arches like they were made out of rice paper (after one repair mine near enough was!)

well if its not Giles slagging off one vehicle I own on one thread its someone else slagging off my merc van on another :p
I have had merc sprinter's medium wheelbase high roof (yep you can stand upright in the back) for the last 7 years and they are the best van's on the road as far as I am concerned

I had a merc vito from new but it was an early one, had more than a few issues then the bottoms of the doors started to rust at 30k miles. Had an lt35 which is a vw but really a sprinter and that was very good but again back doors started to go in random blotches of rust. I really dont know if the newer vans are better but the cars dont rust on the same way, its odd

I wouldnt buy a ford for any price. Sorry. The ibc vans seem to be the best. Heard good and bad about the mercs. Nothing good about ford customer services

If your on a budget then as said transit the way to go, cheap to fix to, mercs are good for pulling weight, vw are good for holding there price....
If your concerned with rust then I would suggest when you buy your van get the underside steam cleaned and then wax oiled in the summer to damp now

Cheap to fix as long as you get parts from the scrappy.
Ford wanted £40 for the crappy little water bottle pump, ~£150 quid for a rear light cover etc

nissan wanted £350 for a mirror :O
i know dan detests fords ,but my chippy had a navarra for 2 years and had nothing but trouble with it and nissan were very unhelpful
he has had a 10k transit for 2 years and no complaints yet
the biggest problem for me with the transits i had (3 of) was they were a constant target for thieves
biggest dog i ever had was a peugot pick up
less said about that the better
