Hi.. I have a couple of questions about a little round limestone sett (100mm, 25-40mm thick) patio im working om..

For the outer ring is it advisable to use a wet or dry mix?

Is there any reason I cannot put the setts very close together?

Can I use jointing sand or is it more advisable to use a resin jointing medium?

Cheers!

it should all be laid on a semi dry mix
but use a bond bridge
larsen do a good slurry mix to coat the back of the setts as you go
joints ideally should not be touching and IMHO should not be less than 3-4mm
a good resin 2 part mortar will stand the test of time
VDW 815 and romex D1 are the best I know of
cheers LLL :)

Ok, thanks LLL :)

What is the reason it isnt good to have the setts touching?

The setts are split, so the shapes are slighly irregular, and i quite like an organic approach where some may touch here and there, and some not

Setts, or any paving units, should not touch because this can result in spalling of the arris, UNLESS the units in question have been cut or moulded to use in a butt-jointed format. So, for example, many block pavers oor small element flagstones which have chamfered arrisses may be laid butt-jointed (but even then, close jointing is preferred.

Explanation of jointing terminology can be found here
