If i could add that you say "unusually it comes with a spare wheel and carrier". How is this unusual? it would be unusual if it didn't!
And also you say there is no vat because you brought it without vat. Surely you mean you are not vat registered, so you are not charging it??:0

Every twin wheel cabstar (there aren't that many) I've seen has had no spare or the carrier for it, confirmed to me by a cabstar spares specialist.
I am vat registered but this was bought by me from a private individual where no vat was applied, therefore because it is out of the vat "circle" i cannot reintroduce it in and charge vat. So i'm told.

If you are VAT reg. and sell anything you have to charge VAT when selling anything , nothing to do with the fact you never paid VAT as the previous seller was not VAT reg.
if it's on your books as a work truck you will have trouble hiding the fact you sold it with no VAT

yes. When you register for vat, its the PERSON who is registered, not the business, and as such, VAT is applicable.

Thats BO*****s.
Evry cabstar i have owned ( 5 now) and every one my mates who have had one, has had a spare wheel and carrier as standard. the spares specialist is not very specialist!

I have owned 8 commercial vehicles in the last 25 years and they all had a spare wheel and carrier ,I thought it was an MOT requirement?
how can a person be VAT registered?
if my company is VAT registered and i buy a hoover I cannot claim the VAT back on that hoover unless I can demonstrate it is for work (had this scenario and they ran me)
if the company buys a vehicle with company funds then yes fair enough that vehicle has to be sold plus VAT.
But if I buy a vehicle privately, and I have bought lots of vans and pick ups privately with my own funds ,then how does that become VAT liable?
makes no sense from here

If a Limited Company is VAT registered the registration is in the name
of the company. The company is "incorporated" - made into a body - and
is distinct from the people who own it (shareholders) and manage it
(directors)
If you are a sole trader you *are* the business and the VAT reg is in
your name.
If you are a partnership you are all, jointly and severally, the
business and the VAT registration is in all your names.
When you sell a business of any kind the new owners can decide to keep
the same VAT number or they can ask HMRC to change it.
My dad has 3 companies all separate and all vat registered with 3 different vat numbers, it's the business not the personal stuff you buy
If jonny bought it as jonny blogs with his personally money not company money and that's on the v5 he can sell it without vat, but should have been charging his company for it's use. If jonny garden services bought it then it has to be sold with vat. Yeah if you are a sole trader then yeah you are vat registered in your name but only applies to business activity can't claim the vat back on the mrs car or shopping lol
Jonny that sh1t about the vat loop made me laugh, they tell you that at the pub. What if your company makes something from scratch then they can't charge vat on it hehe.
Never had a commercial vehicle without a spare wheel it's a requirement to carry one, had 2 cabstars always had them. And id remove the 6 ton thing as it's just says this poor thing has been overloaded and mistreated.

that is my thoughts more or less giles
me , my mum ,and dad are directors of the company, the company is VAT registered
if we buy something solely for the companies use,I.E. a photocopier then its vat is refundable
however if we buy a dyson hoover on the company card then we are in trouble (and yes this did happen) for claiming the VAT back
they would be better off doing away with refunding VAT ,it creates so many potential minefields it would be better off if everyone just paid it end of
the billions they lose on carousel frauds totally overshadow my £22 mistake with a dyson

buying a dyson for a building firm and claiming the vat back is a little bit suspect, unless you could prove that it was just for cleaning an office used solely for the business and no one else.
although you say do away with claiming vat back, how would that work when you buy materials for a job, you would still have to charge the customer Vat, on top of the Vat you have paid on the materials that you cannot claim back ??? would make the job bloody expensive for the customer
TBH, being Vat registered is a good thing (especially claming all the vat back on diesel), If you know how to be sensible. If you are honest, and do things correct, without taking the P**s, then they leave you alone.
they know who the fraudsters are!

its a nightmare on no vat new builds with suppliers all invoicing etc gets confusing, doing the vat returns every quarter etc and now have to start using sage etc to do them online.
we had a 3 year investigation with the local inspector in a local pub laying out how he was going to get us! didn't know the landlord was our friend so after 3 years the only thing he could find was a set of plastic garden furniture from b&q again about £20 of vat. when he came to deliver this news we were sat on said set int eh garage drinkning our brews. we reported him for what he'd said in the pub and he got a tongue lashing.
on a side note we used to have as our rugby coach a senior special tax inspector who always made a point of introducing himself with a business card to the referee before a game hehehe

what i am saying is dan if VAT were say a flat 10%,people would be much more amenable to paying
the fact is that materials on a build are only 30-50% of the build so the rest is labour
In actual fact just do away with VAT on building works and make it 25% on materials non refundable
it baffles me as to why people should pay 20 % for having the pleasure of paying out a kings ransom for building work
theres no incentive to get work done, plus you get clattered for CGT if you make a bean selling the place
RE tax inspectors,I was in the gym many years ago (decades even) and some proper fit bint was sat on the bike next to me,
anyway she starts chatting away la-di-la etc etc
I think "i've cracked it here"
then she says "I work for HMRC"
strangely enough ,i never did speak to her again after that ???
