I'm thinking of buying a 7.5 ton skip wagon to supplement my building business. I passed my car driving licence test in 1990 so i can legally drive a 7.5 tonner.
Any of you guys have experience of the skip/waste industry ?
It does seem to me a very competitve industry to be in.
Any tips/ info ?

1 man band -to many rules and regs to much pressure from the big companys with transfer stations,you cant sort waste you will have to tip it in a landfill at top price, i would not waste you time and money MSH

the fella we use from 3 shires waste says that every week or two he gets new eejits coming in saying" I have started a skip company can i tip my bins in your yard?"
when he tells them its £50 a tonne the next question is "do you want to buy some skips?"
I estimate it has cost him hundreds of thousands of pounds in start up costs, wagons,skips and environmental costs,and he is keen to recoup that outlay
the only way you can make it pay is if you have a free tip some place

lad in our street runs a skip hire business. he does really well but was told in no uncertain terms if he went over midi skip size, he would not be allowed to tip anywhere local and they would bankrupt him within a month. all of the landfill sites around here are owned by the big boys (national waste companies). ???

2012 it all changes anyway and all grandfather rights are rescinded and all back to square one if you havent already got your additional categories, 7.5 ton - 44ton, trailers etc. will be on log books etc and have to do more than a certain number of hours to keep your entitlements.
skip hire, to many competitors, unless you've got land and cheap labour to sort it and recycle the big boys are running at about 85% recycled rate which all means money back, thats where the money is reusing the waste. if you havent got picking lines and shredders and screens etc.
we dont use skips that often, drop a trailer ont he site, old 5 ton tractor trailer and stick a few bulk bags in it, try to get guys to seperate wood plasterboard etc is hard work, cable and metal for scrap etc

3 shires have timber/gypsum/carboard/plastic/metal/rubber recycling bins
once a skip is tipped and the hardcore sorted and the rest recycled there isnt a lot of pure rubbish
you need a 5,000 M2 yard ,100k of machines ,6-10 staff,and obliging neighbours
not something you can pull out of a hat

Thats why the Pikies do so well out of the rubbish removal. Regular access to conveniently located free tipping sites.
