Rotary laser- beam thickness? - Beam/line is 5mm thick- is this normal?

Got a self levelling rotary laser level off ebay.

It works great, but the beam is 5mm thick (if you know what I mean).

I'm just using the top of the laser mark to work from, but is this normal? I was expecting the usual laser line of about 1mm? Could it be a fault?

Its annoying as I have to start my reciever high and lower it down till it beeps on the top of the beamn. If I do it the other way it catches the bottom of the beam (5mm away).

What kinda beam width does your laser project?

As it turns outm the bottom sensor on the laser reciever is faulty so that was confusing me a bit.

I have a 'pro shot' reciever which works brilliantly with it anyways. The detector doesnt seem to mind the wide beam.

When I look at the beam in spot mode, it is 5mm wide, but its actually a round target (like an archery target- a ring with dot in middle) so it must be deliberate?

Accuracy is spot on though- I put it on a tripod and marked 4 corners of the site with a pencil (about 20m radius)- then I turned laser 180deg and lowered it about a meter, then marked again. The distance between the 2 marks were all within 1mm all round happy days!!

Happy with laser now, but reciever will be going back.

before I email the seller about the reciever...

Anyone else with a rotary laser care to comment on how fat their beam/spot is? Is it significantly smaller than 5mm?

That laser is a very poor copy of a C.S.T berger,and a rugby 100
china origins, personally i would not give it house room,if it does your job its ok but need to be handled very carfully as they are not well built,chek it over long range doing the same test, the sellar my help you out nothing to lose if not report it to paypall for refund if in 45 days claim period MSH

I've purchased it for use on my diy garden project.

The levels were causing me a lot of bother.
I have an old (but A1 condition) Topcon theodolite which served us perfectly for setting out and planning, but its a pain for daily use. Biggest raius I will use is about 30m and this laser is spot on for that, so for £200, I'm happy. If I was a full time pro- yes, I woulda deffo splashed out for a decent brand.

Still- nobody has yet directly answered the original question- Is a 5mm spot/beam normal for rotary lasers?

i have never seen a beam that wide

my rotary laser level which was a cheap one from screwfix. the beam/spot gets quite vague 5mm +, the longer the distance but there is a concentrated red spot in the middle.

That reminds me, i've got to get a new anorak for the winter
So why not offset your levels +/-5ML?
