Here goes a crap desciption of a machine that i keep seeing on different sites, its a normal looking excavator, but with a ram on top and one of the side i think of the main boom, and the dipper looks as if its offset to the main boom.
What is it and what are they used for?

it is used for offsett digging paralel with the trench such as basements or square manhole shafts so you dont have to reposition the exavator MSH

so easy to dig a square hole,but you lose out on reach,my mate has a 13t case with a gimpy arm and street pads very usefull excavator MSH

yeah knuckle boom, there ok we had a 3 ton zero tail swing hitachi with it, didnt get on with it prefer the pivoting king post like most 1-8 ton machines,
but its also easy to dig a square hole with a pivoting kingpost machine. the knuckle booms are betting for repeat offset digging like along side a wall etc if your doing a 100metre trench keep the cab square to the trench and keeps all the pull forces in the right direction.

i like the city boom spec'd machines where you can staighten the main boom out as well as the stick,
