Plate wacker advice?

Been landscaping a while but now getting more requests for patios and block paving, instead of hiring im looking at buy a cheap plate. think it will will save me time and cost of hiring and would be payed for on the first job i use it for anyway.

I only need it for smallish patios and paving stuff not driveways or heavy use stuff

Only really have like £300 to spend.

Found this on ebay and figured it would be a good starter for me until i get bigger and better jobs in?

Hi Will I would have reservations about the price 240 quid inc vat is too cheap all those kind of plates are counterfit Chinese jobs. The wholesale price on a 5.5hp GX160 honda engine is £180 +vat and that is the engine thats claimed to be on this one. With your budget you could easily get a top end second hand machine with years of service left. Try local hire shops to see if they're offloading any thats where I've bought a lot of my stuff. I bought a 3yr old 20inch wacker for £340 in Scotland before Christmas and it's a peach. That was a £900 +vat machine when new.

This is a good machine for good money the dirt is probably from a leaky oil cap which costs a pound to sort out. It's a 16" 13kn weighs about 70kg and has antivibe handles. If you bought it cleaned and resprayed it you'd get another £200 for it. I have a couple of the larger versions of these and they're fantastic.

as Pablo said try the hire companies, speedy do an auction sale every year, this includes hewdens. most of the kit is under 18mts old. on ebay you have to be careful, looked at a hilti battery £60 buy it now, list price from hilti £198.00. why is it so cheap?. in the end got one for £100 + delivery ???

That first brand new wacker plate I have had no experiance of, however, i have brought from that seller. (peterjohnlester)I brought a 3kva brand new generator from him, had it over a year now and its been absolutely great. A snip at £140. i collected it from his warehouse.
If it works, then it can't be too bad.

I personally would not buy a cheap plate as they don't have the weight and compaction force need to many passes to get compaction, but if your on a limited budget there is very little wrong with it a friend bought one 18 months a go and has had no problem with it, i would look around to find a genuine wacker,belle or bomag second hand plate there is a lot of dealers selling good plates on ebay if you look about enough , MSH

thanks for all the advice guys, I think im going to hook up one of these ebay specials and use it for a few jobs then upgrade to a decent plate come summer when the works a bit more free flowing, sound a good idea? maybe sell the cheapy back online or even keep it as a reserve

I hadn't thought of that LLL that's a good point although I'd still keep an open mind about it. Dan plates have to take a lot more use and abuse than most other tools if it's too cheap then the parts are going to be low quallity. If it's rated at 15kn chances are a year later it'll only push 8 or 9kn because of the wear to the agitator and bushings etc . It'll still work but you'll not notice the difference in performance which could land you with a call back to fix something. If I bought a machine on ebay I think I'd want to see it first even if it was brand new before I paid a penny.

I looked at those type of wackers when I was buying mine but ended up with a second hand Wacker VP1340 of ebay.

Advantage of buying a used 'name' is you can get spare parts, download manufacturers manuals and pretty much get what you paid for it should you decide to sell it.

When I was looking nearly 2 years ago £200-£275 would buy you a good used machine.
