I made some of my best buys during the previous recessions! It's always worth spending half a day at a plant sale if you've nowt else on. I bought a plate compactor at a sale in Chorley 20-odd years ago for just 20 quid. It's *still* running now, and the only servicing it's ever had would be fresh oil, fuel and air filters.
Bargain!

The last recession was very hard on us, [we are still paying for the effects of it] we lost some very useful items of plant back then.

With sterling as low as it is, a lot of the secondhand kit is heading overseas - Eastern Europe in particular.
It is very sad but, if you look at the data from Off Highway Research, new plant sales accross Europe between 2004 and 2007 were some 25% to 30% above the ten year average. I'd guess the UK must surely have been at the vanguard of this - totally unsustainable.
There were quite a few companies, contractors as well as hireres, who thought that (with 'clever' finance) they'd found a way never to have to put a spanner to a machine on their fleet. Non name, no pack drill...

Went and had a look at the Hewden auction in Bathgate this morning. Some amount of kit up for grabs.
Might go along to the auction tomorrow, see if I can pick up a £20 Wacker, what are the chances? There wasn't many people viewing this morning.

How did you get along hillandtrail?

Didn't go in the end, thought I would only spend money I haven't got on kit I don't really need just yet, plus they needed a £2000 deposit before you could place a bid.
Probably best I don't know the bargains I might have missed out on.

Talking of equipment sales, i'm currently looking for a commercial ride on mower and would like to spend as little as possible, as you do, so i wondered where would i get my hands on such a machine, be it auction or otherwise ? I have tried google and had not a lot of luck.
Cheers Men.
