From what I've learnt (mainly from this site) I know I need to hire a 'whacker' - but is the official name for one, as I can't find it on the hire websites I've looked at.
(Embarrassed - no, not me!!)

"Wacker" is the name of a German company that specialises in the manufacture of compaction equipment. Their vibrating plate compactors are amongst the best in the world, and the similarity of the company name to the english verb, "to whack", has probably done them no end of favours, as many people believer the plates are actually called "Whacker Plates" because they "whack down" the stone/sand/whatever.
