Hi everyone, I'm a new user looking for a bit of advice please. Really impressed with this site by the way, it's very reassuring to see evidence of professional pride and craftsmanship for someone like me about to embark on their first project.

I hope it's not a daft question or one that has an answer already on the site somewhere that I haven't come across, apologies if that's the case.

I'm currently looking at buying a house that sits at the end of a cul-de-sac and will need the front garden paving over to provide parking for us. Before making a decision on going ahead I'm trying to work out a rough budget for this and all the other jobs that I think will need doing. So without being in a position ask for estimates or quotes I'm hoping that I can get some kind of rule of thumb guide that would help me work out whether or not it's worth pursuing.

The house is in Essex, the garden is fairly small - around 6 metres across and 5 deep. It's currently surrounded by a brick wall and has some shrubs that will need shifting. Could you please give me any idea of roughly what sort of ball park figure I should budget for?

Down my way maybe Â£3,000. I would imagine a bit more in your area maybe Â£3,500.

blockpaving , i would do for around Â£80m2 Â£2400+vat subject to site visit in essex MSH

I'm not in Essex but for 200x100 blocks I go in at Â£65m2. That's about the going rate around here. I got under cut the other day by a firm that went in at Â£3500 inc vat for 90m2. Works out at just shy of Â£40m2. From what I gather he's going to do a proper job too. How he's going to do a proper job at that price I have no idea.

Time of year Sy, he's short of work and needs to cover last months invoices whilst cutting himself and a few corners short. Couple of months he will be back up to a respectable price, maybe?

I was thinking along the same lines. I can't see him making more than Â£500 on it. Its not straight forward either as its in 3 seperate areas and there are trees and bushes to come out. :rock:

Between Â£12-Â£15 per my.

I price my jobs at Â£50mm plus the cost of th block.
Edgings, steps, drainage ect at extra cost.

Flags on a full mortar bed is Â£80 plus the cost of the flag.

Jesus wish I could get these prices in Birmingham any more than Â£55sqm an you got no chance.

people round my way doing Â£50 or less a meter all in they cant be doing a proper job for that or they have lads working for faf all a day

Prices vary a lot depending on your location and the deals you get from your suppliers.
If I buy 100m2 or more I get block paving for Â£8m2.
I rent some space on a local farm with an old barn so can keep a good supply of the most popular blocks. Brindle and likes but there's so many products out there that it's offen that your get 100m2 jobs in the same block.
So I usually pay Â£10-12 for lesser amounts.
I start at Â£75m2 for a basic installation . Flat and square with no manholes steps or raised edge with a soft dig. Average job is between Â£90 & Â£110 m2 . I'm in the Oxford area.
