Getting rid of lichen on block paving

My block patio is covered with white greyish lichen, I have used bleach and water but to no avail.

Any other ways of getting rid of the lichen, does it need to be killed off by some form of weed killer (if so any suggestions), and how long does lichen take to die? As I would like to then pressure wash the patio after the lichen has died.

With regards to washing block paving how long should I allow in time to clean each 1sqm of patio?

I'm very surprised it wasn't killed by bleach.

What sort of mixture did you use? Try rogers jollop at the bottom of the stains page

Bleach will most probably be a bit weak once you start to dilute it down, a photo would be good, but the mix on the stains page will remove this, you might need a longer dwell time though.

Not keen on using corrosive mixes, what strength of bleech should i be using, and how long does it take for the lichen to die, so I can then pressure wash the patio with my domestic pressure washer

Hi all

We have been asked for suitable lichen removal products for many years (we are a paving centre supplying all things paving related from Block paving through to natural stone and all associated products)

Up until now we have never really been able to supply anything with confidence and have even struggled ourselves to remove Lichen from displays etc.

I then stumbled across a guy who claimed to have developed a solution (he has worked in stone restoration for 30 years) and i contacted him.

He came to visit us and gave a demonstration on one of our natural stone displays.... We felt the only way to get interested in this product was to see it with our own eyes!

The results were fantastic.. and we have not hesitated to take it into stock.

Don't get me wrong, there are experts who have methods of successfully treating Lichen but they are perhaps not always suitable for the DIY market. Roger is a great help on this site and has a method that he has shared.

The pros and cons:-

The product isn't cheap, a 4 litre tup is £69.99 inc vat and treats up to 20m2 natural stone (18m2 for block paving)

pros:-

- We have seen a demonstration on one of our natural stone display and it works..

- The product is biodegradable and pet friendly

- Its DIY friendly and easy to apply your self

- safe to use around aquatics

- When the product is in its diluted state it is safe to wash into flower beds and over lawns..

- You will require to jet wash off the product but a domestic pressure washer is more than adequate (a commercial pressure washer not required)

- Your stone surface will be protected from constant annual pressure washing. Once you have treated the Lichen, you can purchase a product to prevent is coming back.

You need the berries & fruit area all the instructions are there.
Domestic pressure will do the job, make take a bit longer, but it's not all about power of the machine more the water flow when doing these type of jobs. Unfortunately Sodium Hypochlorite is corrosive but used with care is fine to use.

rogers jollop works great but I reckon its the person using it that makes the difference

I used Rogers jollop on a sandstone footpath that hadn't been cleaned for 15 years. It took me about 4 hours but it came up lovely.

Roger, I've got an area to clean that I won't be able to avoid run off into beds etc. Is there some jollop for this that i can make up or do I have to buy a product?
