Hi everyone. I have spent some time searching on this website what I would like to know but I could not get my answer. Can anybody please explain to me how to lay a standard block with back fall on mortar base, I mean what tool needs to be use? Do I just tap the end of the block that is supposed to fall and check with a spirit level? Sorry I am new to the topic so apologies in advance. Thanks

Hopefully this isn't a wind up. Why a back fall. Any fall in paving is created in your sub base and bedding layers so when you lay blocks they are laid to a fall, or crossfall. If it's building blocks then you to lay on a level bed. And if neeed cutting cut before hand.

I want to build an open drain channel (swale) from blocks so the both sides of the channel must be inclined like in the picture I included.

Peter, as you can see from the picture the bedding is laid to a fall.
If you are using a CBM you will need a good sub base, laid to a fall, use the house wall as a guide and place a string line at the outside edge to lay your 'back fall.' tap the paviour down using either the handle end of a club hammer, a small pavers mallet, or an ordinary hammer with a lump of timber on top surface of the paving. tap down till level with the string line. No special tools required. Good luck.
