Hi All
I have been asked to lay sandstone setts 200mm x100mm x 30-50mm for a residential drive.
Do I have to have a concrete base under a mortar bed
or can I lay on a thick mortar bed above a type 1 sub base?
what depth of mortar do you recommend?

150mm subbase minimum compacted in 2 nos 75 mm layers
100 mm concrete for laying (6:1 sharp sand and cement)
each set needs an SBR/cement slurry applied

As above I used to lay a lot of the 30-50mm setts but haven't used them for a few years now. The 50mm setts make a much better job IMO.

Don't you put any aggregate in the mix such as 10mm stone.

I would lay the un calibrated setts on a lean mix and the 50mm+ on 4-1 sharp/cement with slurry.
6-1 on this path down the side of the house

In the picture your saying, lay the MOT base then 4'' sharp sand cement semi dry then cement slurry poured on top just before you lay the setts.
Like the look of them. My drive is in need of doing. I have got lots of reclaimed setts, more than enough to do my drive.
I am thinking if I did it with these calibrated setts I could get on a lot quicker.
How much are they?

When laying a driveway with either calibrated or un-calibrated would a concrete mix be used or sand/cement and to what depth?
To me 100mm of sand/cement doesn't sound man enough for a drive, calibrated or not.

when i say concrete I am talking screed for driveways
concrete with 20mm aggregate can be a cruel mistress for this type of thing although I have done borders that way

Pretty much why I suggested 10mm at least it beefs it up a bit. A 100mm of sharp sand/cement mix don't sound right to me.
I'm not going to argue though, if that's the way Ashley, Mick and Cookie do it. Their work is impeccable.
Just seems strange that anyone laying a paving flag on anything more than a 50mm bed would get slated on here.

pretty sure that cookie lays on grit sand/cement
if it works ,it works
as said the sub base is all important
I have laid 2by2 council greys on 20mm agg concrete on my own drive years ago and that worked

I set out to lay on 75mm bed over 100-150mm mot. Same as Cookie tho he sometimes uses lean mix in place of mot. Job I'm on at the moment has a pick up, long base sprinter, transporter and car on the limestone sett job I done.
Pretty sure cookie has had 20 tonner across his work. I kept the grab wagon off mine tho just incase

Thanks for the replies.
I was wondering how you joint them. Do you use sand/cement?
Looked at Gftk 850 but it was almost as much as the setts themselves!
