quick one for you here.
i'll be making a border shortly using some granite cobbles, 4inch square.
My plan is to batton with some sensible size wood, dig a small 50mm trench round the battons, fill it with mortor 6/1, and then settle the cobs in, flush against the batton.
once its all set, the batton gets removed, and fake grass installed inside, Pebbles outside.
should be ok ?

just use a line and 2 pins
batten sounds like a tommy walsh trick

Don't know why you want to use batton's you lay paving to string lines!

( its a border thats 1m into a garden, effectivly making a 5mx3m border, 1 cob wide)
because the cobbs are properly random, and i need a straight edge to lay the fake grass into.
will a simple base of mortar be ok, its not going to be used much, and is more of a decrotive thing.

Would you expect to use 2 sets of lines, one for height, and one as a line of strightness ?

bed them on concrete not mortar and just use one line for both height and straightness, with cobbles you can only line up the leading edge as they are all all a bit different.
Aim to lay the top front edge of each cobble to the line.

got ya. Im sure you can see why i thought using timber was a great idea.
Mrs is changing her mind every day now though, no longer is it 4 inch granite cobbles, i wish she would just decide and let me crack on !
