Hi,
I am just about to start my front drive and wanted some advise on the subbase material.
I have previously used Limestone Type 1 when I did my side drive and it worked well but I noticed Crushed/recycled Concrete Type 1 seems to be a lot cheaper than the Limestone material.
Is there any disadvantages in using Crushed Concrete over limestone?

Aslong as said crushed concrete product is of a decent size (40/45mm down) with fines with it to enable interlock AND there is no crap (wood, plastic etc etc) in the product then I wouldn't have any problem using it.

ive used it on a driveway, and it was fine, but it was very clean.
But for some reason i didnt like using it, i was thinking of my wallet and shouldnt of been always more confident with crushed limestone, slightly damp with lots of fines when compacted is like concrete!

I have been bit many times with tales of *pure*type 1 crush concrete and then a skipful of shite turns up
unless you can see what you are buying before they deliver it dont go near it
it may only save you £150 on an average drive but crushed limestone or granite is far superior

as long as you buy it classed as type 1, there is no problem with it, in my area type1 limestone is very expensive, in 20 years off driveway i have always used crushed concrete my aggregate suppler produces it mainly from demo sites ,always clean, its skip co's who sell the suspect stuff,

Type 1 is Type 1 is Type 1 - it should all perform the same even if it looks different. the main issue with Recycled Type 1 is that it doesn't tend to compact as easy as quarry limestone Type 1

i used type 1 crushed concrete from a supplier when I did my drive and whilst the drive is fine 4 years on i still regret it and wish I bought limestone type 1 back then the difference in cost was £4 per ton. if you do buy the crushed look at it first both where your buying and on the lorry before they tip it that way if its sh1te you can send it on while its still in the lorry.

Why does every one have a miss judgement on crushed concrete,As big phil say's Type 1 is Type 1,if sold as crushed concrete it is usually 3inch down
In my area most gravel driveways, house oversites,also alot of paved area's are constructed using a material called "carstone" which is a sandstone usually with a type 2 rating
been used for years with no problems
you will never see type 1 in a oversite,
The local highways direct labour use tarmac plannings for footway sub-base.... never a problem
If compacted in layers with a good size plate in different directions, there is no problems

in my case it was the fact that the extra £80 it would have cost would have given a better peace of mind. it was sold as type 1 crushed concrete (and says so on the delivery ticket), most of the 20T got put straight down, the 3/4T i had left over that needed bagging up produced a tub of crap inc metal, cable, plastic and wood and bits of thermalite blocks, so the bit that bugs me, what did I bury????
just to note the other 14T of sub base was made up of some the best crushed concrete ever produced, as it was done by me using dan's crusher, as is the patio so I don't have anything against crushed, just a case of knowing where it comes from and the quality you get means, buyer beware.

I give customers the choice, type 1 or recycle.....same with bitmac, hardstone or limestone.

the only pure crushed concrete i ever saw came from H.lovedays and was straight off the m1
we used to use flint rejects from the local chalk quarries in oversites
but i would say very few loads of type 1 recycled are worth a carrot mark
last one i has smelled of mud and basically was mud and some various crap
if its just concrete being crushed then fair enough
but IME its a skip going into the crusher

Type 1 is derived from the highways spec, and the variation in grading limits is less noticeable on large contracts when it's placed by grader or paver and roller compacted. Quarry crushed limestone Type 1 produces more floury fines that enhances compaction compared to recycled Type 1.
There's also some merchants who buy in cheap quarry fill/crusher run (or process their own) and sell it on as Type 1 without much compliance testing.
