I am using a wacker that does not have a rubber bottom. Should I use some protection when using it on the block surface and if so what can I use i.e. pice of Carpet!

With all block paving I personally just use a thin film of the kiln dried sand spread over the area and plate on that. Never had any problems and i actually find it can be a good way to blend joins between old and new.
