I have a pile of old bricks and a going to be digging up a concrete drive. It seems a bit pointless to pay for skips to remove the bricks and concrete, and then pay for the materials for a sub base.
However I have never seen anyone use a concrete crusher to create their own reclaimed MOT1.
So way are concrete crusher not used for this domestic sites?

not wanting to sound negative here but unless the driveway is over 150m2 - 200m2 it cant be cost effective to hire a crusher and small mini digger and spend a couple of days crushing it into bite size pieces when you can buy the same stuff for £12 a ton, your still going to need a skip to remove any organic waste, shrubs etc anyway and the concrete will weigh that down
if its your own driveway and its a DIY project and you have all the time in the world to do the job then yeah you might save a couple of £100 doing it this way but not when its your livelihood

if there is a skips worth of hardcore alone, it is worth it , though i cannot speak for prices up north.
down here, decent crushed is like gold dust.last time i saw some being delivered, there was starw, soil, glass, engine oil filters, aerials, cement bags and 4x2 offcuts in it.
A skip down here is getting on for £200 with the vat.
Days crusher hire is £150. there is £50 saved, and you have not had to buy the crushed in.
There is a "its easier just to skip it and buy it in" mentality that we all need to avoid, and i don't say that just so people will hire the crusher!
The more we can all do to reduce road haulage, and landfill, the better

In Stockport there are 101 companies that will supply skips, but there does not seem to be a local crusher hire company. Skips are about £145 (inc vat) for an 8 yard (without trade discount) and £17+vat per ton for “Crushed Concrete MOT once again without a trade discount.
I don’t see why a crasher will be much slower then loading a skip unless you have a skip loader or lots of workers on site. But clearly you need somewhere close by for the output of the crasher, and then to move the output back to the driveway.
Are the “mini crasher up to the job, or is the output not of a high enough quality?
I can see way in London with all the very high transport costs and access issues, crushers will be very common, they just don’t seem to have made their way north yet.
Thinking about this a bit more, part of the issue may be that a 8 yard skips is a lot less than double the price of a 4 yard skip, I assume the a role on role off skip is even less relative to its size and very quick to load with a digger.

ringi what is this " trade discount" you speak of?
i heard tell of it way back in the 1970s,but was under the impression it ,along with flares and betamax video tapes were extinct?
bulk discount is another thing entirely, but anyone buying in bulk gets that
my mate works in a well known builders merchant in luton
he has polish, pakistani and pikey builders coming in and they dont speak a word of the queen's english
except
"discount"

I got a brick layer building a garden wall for me at present, last week he placed an order with TP over the phone without telling them his “cash account details, and they charged him double for some of the items compared to when he went into the branch where the manager recognised him.

travis " thieving" perkins as we jokingly call them are well known for this type of thing
every item has a *list* price
say £1 for a class B brick
joe public goes in and the sales team say i will give you 35% off list if you buy 500
joe public thinks he has a deal
I go in and say i will buy 25,000 over a year
they may give me 45% off list due to bulk
hoever if i send one of my blokes down to get 10 bricks to finish something off and do not mention any arrangement I get charged £10 for 10 soddin' bricks
hope this clears it up
